Blockbuster to Offer Week-long Summer Escape Pass

In case you plan to take a week off of school or work to solely watch movies and play video games, Blockbuster's Summer Escape Pass will make the couch potatoage economical.

For $10, Blockbuster is offering a Summer Escape Pass. Each is good for a week and offers unlimited rentals of movies and video games. The catch, of course, is that you can only rent one movie or game at a time. Kid hit by meteorite = WTF?

This 14-year-old boy is Gerrit Blank, and he is probably smiling because he survived a 30,000 mph meteorite hit. His tale—confirmed by scientists at Germany's Walter Hohmann Observatory—seems like the genesis of a superhero:

At first I just saw a large ball of light, and then I suddenly felt a pain in my hand. Then a split second after that there was an enormous bang like a crash of thunder. The noise that came after the flash of light was so loud that my ears were ringing for hours afterwards. When it hit me it knocked me flying and then was still going fast enough to bury itself into the road.

That could have been written by Stan Lee himself, but it is what really happened. According to scientists, the highly magnetic rock—the size of a pea—came from outer space. It was probably a lot bigger when it entered the atmosphere, but this was the bit that survived the burning process. It hit him on his hand, leaving a 3-inch scar. If the hot meteorite had hit him on his head or torso, he would be dead now.

Only one other human has survived a meteor strike—a 1 in a million chance.
The only other known example of a human being surviving a meteor strike happened in Alabama, USA, in November 1954 when a grapefruit-sized fragment crashed through the roof of a house, bounced off furniture and landed on a sleeping woman.

ahha i think that sleeping woman story is funnier.

Creator of Traffic Monster arrested?!

NC State student Joseph Carnevale, the artist behind the Traffic Barrel Monster, has been arrested for stealing the barrels and "cutting and screwing them together to make a statue," which apparently is a misdemeanor in North Carolina.
Carnevale goes by the name "uliveuburn" and has been a fixture in the Raleigh-area street art scene for a while, notable for his creation of the Boylan Bridge Angry Man. Given the similar theme and creativity it didn't take the local police long to decide the 21-year-old is to blame. The total cost of the damage has been estimated at $360 and a court case is scheduled for July 21st.
Here's a pic of the citation.

I think this guy made a great contribution to society and he gets arrested?! Carnevale, come move to LI, NY.. I'll welcome you with arms wide open.

World record for most people dressed as Smurfs.. la la la

The world record for the largest number of people dressed as Smurfs has been smashed in Swansea. The Welsh city produced 2,510 people *ahem* smurfs, the majority of whom were students from the local university, crammed into the Oceana night club to almost double the previous record.
The event was organised by UK fancy dress costume seller Jokers' Masquerade and was not verified until 1am as every "Smurf" had to be checked to make sure no natural skin was showing... wth.. i see one guy with peach colored arms in the lower left quadrant of the above photo.

Rebecca Oatley, of Jokers' Masquerade, said: "Smurf Guinness World Record holder has become an illustrious title.
She added: "This is just the beginning of our world record run. We are hoping to set, break and smash Guinness World Records for iconic characters from Daleks to Superheroes. Watch this space."

uhh.. don't you people have any higher and more worthy aspirations?
